("rolled object with pictures"). Long, horizontal handscroll, unrolled from right to left, containing illustrations that tell a story, often with accompanying text. The format, recognized as one of the high points of painting in the native Japanese style, flourished during the Heian period (794-1185) and Kamakura period (1185-1333).
