Anglo-Japanese Alliance

A military alliance between Great Britain and Japan, concluded in 1902 and lasting until 1923. It helped mark Japan's emergence as a major power in the Far East. The treaty provided for joint action in the event of encroachment against either of the allies by Russia in concert with any fourth power. The two nations affirmed their recognition of each other's special interests and privileges in China, as well as of Japan's special interests in Korea.
