Japan and its Asian Neighbors: History, Islands, and National Identity

Professor Constantine Vaporis of the University of Maryland presents and leads an online roundtable about Japan's relationship with its East-Asian neighbors. Dr. Vaporis discusses four aspects of the "History Issue" in Japan: the Yasukuni Shrine in Tokyo; the Comfort Women; historical accountability of Japanese textbooks; and the disputes between Japan, Korea, and China over island ownership.


 

 


Dr. Constantine Vaporis is a Professor of Asian Studies as the well as the Director of  the Asian Studies program at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County. In addition to teaching Japanese and Asian History,Dr. Vaporis also holds an affiliate appointment in the Gender and Women's Studies Program. He has published several books including his most recent work, Voices of Early Modern Japan.
