Shikoku

The smallest of Japan's four main islands. Shikoku lies to the south of western Honshū and consists of Kagawa, Tokushima, Ehime, and Kōchi prefectures. Shikoku's high mountains and steep slopes severely limit agriculture, habitation, and communication. Takamatsu and Matsuyama are the largest cities. (adapted from Japan: An Illustrated Encyclopedia. Tokyo: Kodansha, 1993)
