Imperial Household Agency

Government agency responsible for the personal, ceremonial, and official affairs of the emperor and his family. Formed in 1947 and named Kunaichō in 1949 to replace the former Imperial Household Ministry (Kunaishō), it takes charge of the administrative duties concerning the emperor's acts in matters of state and takes custody of the imperial seal and the seal of state. It is responsible for maintaining imperial records and documents and caring for imperial tombs and any state property used by the imperial family. (adapted from Japan: An Illustrated Encyclopedia.
